The Philippines is back in the international basketball scene after qualifying for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup after a 38 years hiatus. At the expense of the South Korean basketball national team and after years of heartbreaking losses at the hands of the Koreans, the Philippines qualified at the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship semis match-up. Eventually losing to Asia powerhouse, Iran, in the finals, the Philippines made an introduction to the world and what to expect at he Basketball World Cup.
The Philippine National Team or Gilas Pilipinas, ranked #34 in the FIBA World Rankings, is grouped with Argentina (#3), Greece (#5), Croatia (#16), Puerto Rico (#17) and Senegal (#41) in Group B. Gilas Pilipinas, ranked as one the 'worst' team heading into the World Cup by ESPN started play of the Basketball World Cup versus Croatia, losing in overtime 78-81. Gilas Pilipinas then lost by 12 to Greece. Argentina then dealt another heartbreaking loss to the Filipinos, 81-85. In the three games the Filipinos have played, the team has lost with an average of 6.33 points against some of the worlds best basketball team. The team has earned the respect and admiration of the international community and Argentina head coach, Julio Lamas, even labelled the game played versus Gilas Pilipinas as the 'the most uncomfortable game I had to coach in my life', another nod that Gilas Pilipinas is leaving an impression in every game it plays.
Gilas Pilipinas has to beat Puerto Rico and Senegal and pray that Senagal losses its match versus Argentina to make it to the next round.
